TV Resource: Neua Chan Phan Plaek TV Show with Stu Jay Raj
In 2009 Stuart Jay Raj co-hosted a Thai television show called เหนือชั้น1000แปลก [nɯ̌:a cʰán pʰan plæ̀:k]. The show’s title is a play on words in Thai and makes for a good Thai lesson in itself:
เหนือ nɯ̌:a = north / above
ชั้น cʰán = level / storey (層)
1000 pʰan = the same pronunciation as the word for ‘species’ – พันธ์ pʰan
แปลก plæ̀:k = strange
So the sentence [nɯ̌:a cʰán pʰan plæ̀:k] to the Thai ear can either mean
1000 (many) strange, extraordinary things
Something extraordinary and strange
In this show it was Stuart’s role to travel the world and search out some of the most strange and extraordinary things, in most cases hitting the ground and mixing with the locals in their local languages including Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tagalog and more.
The main language of the show is Thai, so makes for good listening practice – especially in conjunction with the subtitles in English.
